I recently spent time back east and went to the Harvard Museum of Natural History. I found the exhibits very interesting, but what really intrigued me were the incredible mahogany cabinets that housed the pieces. Clean, precise joinery and a minimal amount of flourish – these cabinets were perfect for display. So I was very excited to do a display cabinet for the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB). It is a bit harder to get affordable mahogany these days, so I found some amazing reclaimed old growth douglas fir, which I find to be beautiful. The inside is Eastern Hard Maple. I used Claro Walnut as an accent on the handles and glass stops. Heavy duty yet minimal brass hinges help complete the overall look.
