THE KMA BEDROOM SET

2013

THE KMA DRESSER IS THE FIRST PIECE OF THE KMA BEDROOM SET.  THE PLANKS OF CLARO WALNUT HAD AMAZING DEPTH AND COLOR, AND I WANTED TO SHOWCASE THIS IN THE DRESSER.  THE FRAME IS MADE OF RIFT SAWN WHITE OAK.  THE "PANEL" IS A SINGLE PIECE OF WALNUT THAT CASCADES OVER THE TOP OF THE DRESSER- CONNECTED WITH DOVETAIL JOINTS.  THE DRAWERS ARE TWICE BOOK-MATCHED AND GRAIN-MATCHED TO THE TOP OF THE CABINET.  THE DRAWER SIDES ARE WESTERN MAPLE.  THE DRAWER BOTTOMS ARE UNFINISHED SPANISH CEDAR (FOR ITS PLEASING SMELL) WITH CLARO WALNUT ACCENT.  FINISH IS GEL VARNISH.  APPROXIMATELY 30" X 40" X 18". THE KMA BED IS THE OTHER PIECE OF THE KMA BEDROOM SET.  THE PANELS WERE MADE BY RESAWING THE END OF THE WALNUT PLANK TO MAKE VENEER PANELS.  THE GRAIN IN THIS WOOD WAS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, BUT SO ERRATIC IT WOULD NEVER HOLD UP WITHOUT BEING BONDED TO A SUBSTRATE.  I WANTED EACH PANEL TO APPEAR AS A FLOATING PICTURE, WITH ITS LIGHT OAK BORDER. THIS WAS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH THE USE OF EXPOSED MORTISE AND TENON JOINERY.  FINISH IS GEL VARNISH.
